Dear Principal,
Recent news reports have shown that bullying is on the rise in Singaporean schools.
In an article by Channel NewsAsia titled 95 percent of primary, secondary students experienced bullying in schools", almost all of the 4000 students surveyed said they have experienced bullying; with more than 50% revealing that they were victims of physical bullying! That is very alarming news indeed. Click here to read the article
What's even more worrying is that "many teachers are unaware of actual cases of bullying because the victims are too afraid to speak up".
Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend that is not exclusive to Singapore.
Bullying is a real and present issue that is plaguing the education system
all over the world. We all have heard of school shootings and suicide
incidents in the US, while recent news reports tell of increasing numbers of
student suicides in Japan
(Click here for the alarming news reports). All these symptoms are directly and indirectly
caused by bullying cases.
While "bullying" seems like a small word-something petty and childish-it can
actually have a huge impact on everyone who have suffered under it.
Whether verbal or physical, bullying leaves a huge scar in people's
minds and hearts.
In response to the research, the Ministry of Education is implementing
"appropriate disciplinary measures on bullies and counselling".
It has also stated clearly that "bullying in schools is regarded as
a serious matter".
But such measures may not be enough.
Implementing disciplinary measures and counselling are reaction-based
solutions that might even be counter-productive to the children's attempts
to reach out.
Instead of blindly implementing reactive solutions, you can implement a
proven, preventive, wholesome approach that has worked for thousands of
school all over the world.
Introducing…
Mary Carlson, a neurobiologist at Harvard Medical School,
found that the lack of touch and attention stunt children's
growth and adversely affect their behaviour.
Children who experienced a lack of touch do not form normal
relationships with other kids, are unresponsive and fearful, and
exhibit behaviours such as self-clasping, rocking, swaying and
increased aggressive tendencies. They also have a higher
predisposition to some form of early brain degeneration and memory loss.
In contrast, science has proven that the tremendous benefits of
massage include physical, emotional and mental well-being. When
you implement MISP in your school, you can expect to experience
the following benefits:
- Significant decrease of bullying and aggressive acts in the school
- Increased self-confidence and esteem in students
- A sense of respect for self and others
- Less hyper-activity and hyper-sensitivity
- Increased focus and concentration, resulting in better academic performance
- Calm and attentive behaviour
- Greater social cohesion and empathy for others
- Their motor and listening skills are increased
- And many more…
These are just some of the direct benefits experienced by the students. Imagine the equally powerful indirect benefits such as:
- Teachers having an easier time managing and teaching the students
- An improved overall school performance
- Students being able to better relate to their parents, thus enjoying a deeper sense of family love
- And many more…
Having MISP in your school is like dropping a stone in the water. The positive rippling effects will overflow directly into the lives of your students and their environment.
And the best part… MISP only requires 10 minutes a day to produce all of the above results and more in your school!
MISP is an easy, quick and effective tool to improve children's quality of life in school. The Massage-in-Schools Association (UK), was officially founded in 2000 by Mia Elmsater (Sweden) and Sylvie Hetu from Canada, with the vision that every school-going child should experience a positive and nurturing touch everyday. Since its inception, it has benefited hundreds of thousands of students worldwide.
MISP has been so successful that it has been implemented in more than
1,000 schools in London alone. In the UK itself, MISP had such
a noticeable effect on bullying that the Massage-In-Schools
Association has been invited to participate in the Department for
Education's anti-bullying workshops.
Here's a little peek into how the technique is carried out:
- The students will massage each other with proper instructions. They will be fully clothed.
- The massage is given and received by the students with their own permission.
- The massage involves the students' back, shoulders, arms and hands.
- The entire basic routine takes no more than 10 minutes when mastered by the students
Now, your school can also experience the tremendous benefits of MISP.
It is critical to start the program with the right instructions from
the pioneering expert in Singapore.
